KISS OF A ROSE

Your kiss pierced my lip
and made me aware
we had our thorns

I wanted the velvet back
that fell in petals
around me
like butterflies
that light on skin

the newness that unfolded
like years
when I'd only known you
fractions of seconds
that flashed
the way they do
when you rub tired eyes
after a good cry

now that we've become
comfortable
we smell so sweet
but our soft places
are hidden beneath
prickly stench
of might have been

so let's press this
between pages
for safe keeping
or close this book
for good

while we still have
something
worth remembering

HOW CAN I?

How can I
with this simple tongue
describe a sky
like Neruda or Estes

explain
a quiet burn
on cheeks
from a star
called Sun

express my desire
like a soldier
or a bear
awakening
from such a long
sleep

how can I
make you feel me
with this mouth
that knows only
sweet and sour
bitter
and savory

and rain
when it opens
to a sky
that I can't
write about
but appreciate
just the same

and your kisses
that I could never
do justice
with pen and paper

like that vast sky

IF I COULD WRITE A KISS

If I could write a kiss,
I'd give it satin lips,
that billow in the moment,
like masts of passing ships,

The kiss would start out slow,
as delicate as a rose,
then build to so much more,
the way true passion grows,

You'd wish upon a star,
this kiss would last and last,
the words would read so real,
they'd make your heart beat fast,

Your knees would soon be weak,
from  the fire of the text,
you'd have to close your eyes,
imagining what comes next,

And only in a dream,
have you ever felt such flutter,
and heard inside your head,
words such a kiss would utter,

You'd quiver in its' splendor,
powerless to resist,
I'd make you fall in love with me
If I could write a kiss.
